The Hopkins Street Affordable Housing development of thirty units is located in the heart of the working class suburb of Moonah. It supports a community of tenants drawn from the public housing list, and the development is flexible, accessible and affordable in order to accommodate their needs.
The design, with a communal open area contained within a perimeter of housing, is a symbolic and practical demonstration of an oasis of calm within the urban activity that surrounds it. The design responds to its context in its form, materiality and appearance, but also exhibits high levels of energy efficiency, sustainability and site amenity.
The project makes a confident statement in support of a paradigm shift in thinking about what social housing should be and should look like. As examples, it is registered to achieve a 5 star Green Star multi unit residential design rating and every unit achieves a minimum 7.3 star FirstRate energy rating; a communal playground and dining facilities are incorporated; and comprehensive recycling opportunities are provided. These initiatives deliver real benefits to tenants. More than anything however, they represent the effort made to offer community members with limited housing choices access to a high quality living environment.
