A major integrated refurbishment and fit out of the former Australia Post mail exchange building in central Hobart to provide new offices. A central tenet of our design approach was to make a design feature of and express the industrial character of the building and to use this to achieve both a highly successful “brand” for the project and to achieve sustainable design outcomes.
Our Green Star approach and assessment at the outset of the project allowed us to identify and incorporate innovative and non-traditional mechanical services systems and a best practise lighting design to maximise passive performance and achieve significant energy savings. For example the existing concrete soffit was cleaned and painted and used as a thermal store instead of being covered and isolated by a suspended ceiling. Lighting and service structures are then allowed to “float” through the space.
